Winter Sunscreen: Are You Really Covered?

It seems like a no brainier to the fairer bunch: broad spectrum sunscreen should be part of everyone's daily routine. However, during my yearly dermatologist appointment I learned that many women are prone to developing skin cancer on their legs. Guiltily, this is one place I skimp on (it's the one place I do tan)!

My doctor walked me through areas that women may miss for everyday coverage-- the "French" face which includes your neck and dΓ©colletage, your calves, ankles and back of your hands. For ladies/gents with shorter haircuts, don't miss your ears and back of your neck. It started me thinking about the larger fashion trends that are now SF staples year round--ankle length pants, boyfriend jeans, scoop necks and the hot plunging neckline.

So what brands should you be using for body coverage that won't leave you smelling like the beach in February? Below is a list of brands Megan and I use--as always consult your dermatologist about the brands that are the best for your unique skin.

1. Dermalogica Pure Light SPF50- this medium weight moisturizer is great for brightening and evening skin tone.

2. Rodan + Fields Reverse- Megan's personal favorite, she wears it everyday to to protect her skin while diminishing damage already done by the sun.

3. Aveeno Protect + Hydrate- created for the face and body, this powerhouse hydrates the skin while protecting from the sun.

4. EltaMD UV Clear SPF46- My favorite, this lightweight oil-free sunscreen is great for sensitive and acne-prone skin.

Menswear Gametime: The Best Gym Clothes For Every Man

Just because you are sweating doesn't mean you don't want to look stylish. We often get asked for recommendations for good workout gear for both men. If you are a man, you want it to be functional, comfortable and still have a hint of style (yes, you can throw your old college basketball shorts away now).

Esquire magazine one-upped us by listing their top 11 workout items that no man should be without. Their no-fuss guide includes a good hoodie, merino wool workout socks (they absorb moisture and prevent blisters, and versatile shorts.

Silver and Gold: Mixing & Matching For Spring

In anticipation of Spring, Kimberly and I have been craving lots of brightness lately. This winter has been full of dark blues, grays and of course, plenty of black. So on a recent trip to the Ferry Building, I decided to lighten things up with metallics.

Mixing and Matching Metals

I've blogged before about my love of mixing silver and gold together. It's an easy way to add extra interest and let your accessories pump up a look. I prefer pieces that are delicate so that I can layer on 2-3 different necklaces without overpowering my overall outfit. You can also do this with bracelets and rings.

Amp It Up With Metallic Accents

Jewelry isn't the only way to add some shimmer to your outfit. If you are finding yourself feeling the winter duldrums and want to add shine, try a metallic clutch against an all black outfit or a classic black boot with gold detailing on the heels. And if you're feeling extra adventurous, you can never go wrong with vintage-inspired sequins!

Valentine's Day Prep: A Shopping Trip At The Ferry Building

Whether your sweetheart is a little one, your better half, your Galentines or yourself make sure you treat everyone right this year. Growing up Valentine's Day was a day to cherish and gift your loved ones with a surprise card, small token or sweet.  That's something I've continued into my adult life and frankly couldn't everyone benefit from a little more love and kindness these days??

Megan and I headed down to the SF Ferry Building to shop for some goodies that suit the personal style of all of our Valentines. We both love this San Francisco marketplace for it's fun mix of foodie delights and unique local gifts. Here is a list of some of our favorite shops in the Ferry Building --perfect for picking up a small a token of love.

Kimberly is wearing Ann Taylor Loft Shift Dress, French Sole Flats, Zara Cropped Jacket (old staple)

Meitte We love this storybook bakery that is every bit whimsical and it is sweet. In addition to baked goods, they import an amazing mix of specialty candies from across the globe. Not sure if sour puckers or raspberry drops are the best gift? Ask for a sample before you buy. Their chocolate sables (shortbread) are NOT to be missed!!

The Gardner Looking for the perfect note to say it all or a small trinket for a green thumb? We can't get enough of The Gardner's cheery selection of stylish small house wears and curated giftables.

Magnolia Bakery Love a good pastry, but can't handle the gluten? This is Megan's go to place to shop for something sweet and scrumptious.

Acme Bread If gluten isn't a concern and flavor is, you won't find a better place to buy a baguette or pan eppi to accompany a special meal. Make sure you swing by Cowgirl Creamery to finish off the spread with a locally made cheese like Red Hawk.

A Tale of Two Trenches: The Color Pop Coat

If there is one PERFECT coat for San Francisco living Megan and I both agree it is the trench. While a down or leather jacket come in a close second, the versatility of the trench is perfect for our turn on a dime weather.

More rain is in the forecast this week so we thought it was a natural topic to talk about. Guy's if you missed our post about all weather attire be sure to see below.

Choosing the right starter trench is personal but look for a well made jacket that is lined, water repellant and a length that works for you (we prefer a knee length). While a classic color is a great investment (Megan will talk about that on Friday) I like the idea of having a pop of color to brighten up a gray day.

Style Meets Function: Rain Boots For Him & Her

These recent storms have had us finding new ways to brave the weather without sacrificing style. The key is having the right shoes to get you there.

Finding The Perfect Rain Boot

For both men and women, rain boots can often feel clunky and and heavy. If you have smaller ankles, look for a style that is tapered near the foot or opt for a short boot. For wider calves go for a pair with an adjustable strap at the top or a stretchy panel (this work for both men and women).

A Pair For Every Style and Weather

Regardless of your lifestyle and fashion sense--investing in at least one pair of waterproof shoes is a must for Northern California living. Where to start? We put together a Pinterest board of our favorite rain, snow and sleet shoes for MEN and WOMEN that perform depending on what you throw at them.

Tackling Winter Sales: What To Invest In Now

The holidays have come and gone and 2017 is underway. As you've probably noticed, stores are having incredible sales to make way for new spring arrivals.

Navigating Winter Sales

We often get asked what is worth investing in now, versus waiting for the new season. Classic wardrobe staples are what you want to focus on right now. We are talking about the pieces that you can wear next winter regardless of the trend.

What To Invest In Now

Here is our list of items that you definitely want to scoop up during the sales.

  1. Outerwear- winter jackets and coats are starting to be discounted. Our favorite picks: The Down Puffer, The Classic Wool Dress Coat, Leather Jackets.
  2. Boots- leather boots and booties are great to scoop up right now. Our Picks: Snow Boots, Tall Riding or OTK Boots.
  3. Cashmere- cashmere sweaters, gloves and scarves are on sale. These aren't only great for you, but if you're a planner scoop some up as gifts for next year.
  4. Leather Goods- also a great giftable, leather wallets are great to pick up this time of year.
  5. Holiday/Formal Wear- have a black tie in your future? Now is the time to purchase gowns, as well as costume jewelry and party shoes.

Pro tip: A good rule of thumb is to NEVER to buy something on sale that you wouldn't pay full price for. Even if it's a good deal, if it doesn't fit right or you don't love it, just say no.

A Few Of Our Favorite Sale Picks

Here are a few of our favorite sale items of the season, all at up to 60% off (WOW!). Click through the pic for more info and act fast because they are selling out quickly.

Men's Style: Waterproofing Your Work Wardrobe

It's supposed to storm all weekend, but don't worry men we have your covered (literally!). In our latest menswear feature, we breakdown the science of what to wear to work in wet San Francisco weather.

Layering is Key

Guys, play the rule of three when dressing. Sure a shirt and a great pair of jeans make a solid foundation, but layering adds personality. Try adding a jacket, sweater or visible undershirt. Do you overheat easily? Nix the heavy layers and play with adding a fun sock, accessory or statement shoe.

These Aren't Your Dad's Khakis

Many of our clients roll their eyes when we suggest adding a khaki to their wardrobe. Newsflash gents--the khaki got a modern makeover in a slimmer silhouette. Give your daytime wardrobe a fresh look. We love AG's Nomad and Graduate styles!

Add An All Weather Jacket

In SF you pretty much need to be prepared for wind, rain, fog and sunshine all in one day. Find a versatile jacket that isn't too heavy and is rain-resistant. This way you won't soak in a rain storm, but it can also come off and easily be toted when the sun decides to peek out.

Uptown Downtown NYE Style

New Year's Eve is just a a few days away and we have been busy planning what to wear. While Megan prefers to lay low with friends, I always enjoy getting glammed up for a night of celebrating with close friends and loved ones.

Simple Uptown Downtown Dressing

The key to enjoying a night of festivites is a outfit that doesn't get in the way. Both Megan and I love the "high-low" approach of this look that is perfect for San Francisco. The mix of an edgy moto jacket with a feminine glittery lace midi dress strikes the right balance. What makes a look "high-low"? In this case opposites attract in unexpected ways. We paired an investment piece, a Theory Leather Jacket, with a lower priced lace dress from Topshop.

Accessorize with Strong Players

To add a little more luxe to the look I layered on strong accessories. An old statement necklace that mirrors the dress neckline adds the right amount of bling while standing up to the bold lines of the moto. My trusty gold toe pumps finish the look and keep the harmony of the Uptown Downtown vibe.

Want to make the look your own? Start with our simple equation: Feminine Dress + Structured Jacket (we love the moto) + Dance Worthy Pumps and add a dash of fun with accessories that you love.
