Kimberly's Weekend Sweater Weather Look

Every fall I invest in one really great sweater to add to my collection. Living in San Francisco, you can easily wear sweaters year round so I switch them out seasonally. I have a weakness for cashmere so when I spotted this Rag&Bone sweater at Nordstrom Rack this summer, its days were numbered. After it went on clearance I snatched it up knowing I would wear it nonstop in a few months.

Purchase Sweaters That Can Be Worn in Different Ways

Now that temperatures have dipped, this cuddly friend has become a wardrobe staple. The design is generous, boxy and slightly higher in the front. Because of the cut, it can easily be worn with with a flowy skirt, waxed denim, trousers or skinny jeans.

Here are some of my favorite versatile sweaters this season guaranteed to keep you cuddly and warm:

While I love a great elegant look, I also love to be comfortable--fussy isn't for me! Part of the equation of sweater weather is a boot or bootie to stay dry. Several shoe brands now offer weatherproof styles that are lightweight and perfect for our Bay Area climate.

Aquatalia and Blondo are two of my favorite companies. Nordstrom Rack has been good to me this year and I found these fawn colored booties on clearance. They have just enough heel to balance a boxy sweater and are comfortable when I'm on my feet all day with clients.

Kimberly

What to Wear to Friendsgiving

Today on the blog, Devon shares how to dress for a Friendsgiving dinner with the perfect balance of style and comfort.

Fall is definitely my favorite time of year-- the cozy layers and textures I love are in full force. When it comes to dressing for Friendsgiving and other holiday potlucks, comfort is key in order to enjoy all of the delicious food. Keep it stylish while you celebrate with contemporary proportions and seasonal hues.

The Perfect Low-Key Holiday Party Outfit

Friendsgiving involves two things: lots of food and wine. So a comfortable look is absolutely essential. A modern tee paired with a fun and festive skirt means you can party and dine with ease.

As the temperatures drop, it’s time to break out the warm layers. The ‘coatigan,’ or sweater coat, is an easy way to take your simple look to the next level, and stay warm while party-hopping.

Fall is for Coatigans

The Coatigan is everywhere this fall. This season, I am living in my Uniqlo Coatigan. This piece is the perfect combination of coat and cardigan (hence the name!) and it’s just the right weight for fall in San Francisco. A long sweater coat is a cool and contemporary addition to any wardrobe. The exaggerated proportions make a simple outfit look extra chic.

Here are some of my favorite picks for any budget:

Autumnal Inspiration

For me, the cooler months are the perfect time to throw on my all black uniform. While I won’t be straying away from my dark palette anytime soon, a pop of warm seasonal color is the perfect way to add a festive touch.

Mustard yellow is having a huge moment this season. It’s the perfect fall color if you tend to shy away from red tones. This bright hue surprisingly works with most skin tones, give it a try if you don’t believe me!

Stay Stylish,

Devon

Feminine Edge: How Kimberly Wear's Her Coated Denim

Take Time To Try Something New

The waxed denim look has been around for several years and I've put many clients in a sleek pair. It's a great way to add a little edge to your wardrobe and test the waters. Purchasing a pair for myself was bound to happen, but like some of my clients I just needed a little time to warm up to the idea. Honestly, it took a year (or two) and now there is no turning back!

Try Trends At A Lower Price Point

When investing in trends, I usually like to try to find them at a lower price point since I know they won't be long-term closet staples. I finally found the perfect fit at the right price and purchased a pair of Joe's Coated Skinny Jeans from Nordstrom Rack (other colors).  I also loved the EMMA DL1961 Power Legging. Since I'm often leaning over adjusting client hems and cleaning out closets, the higher rise was more comfortable.

PRO TIP: Many of our clients ask about when to invest in trends and when to remove them from your closet. As a rule of thumb, basic trends have about 2-3 years to fully cycle through the market. Once lower priced brands knock off a style give it about 1 year until market saturation.

Balancing Edge with Femininity

At the heart of my style is a strong pragmatic vein that keeps my wardrobe classic. However, I like to throw in modern or feminine pieces to keep things interesting. Waxed denim is a fun way to execute this and add a bit of texture to my wardrobe that I have been craving. A great coated denim plays off a winter sweater and adds a bit of structure (and insulation) that a skinny jean or legging can't.

Occasionally we strike GOLD at Canvas and I found the Rachel Zoe Maeve Silk Blouse pictured at Nordstrom Rack for $20--that's not a typo (it was originally $345).  I like how the flowy feminine blouse plays off the starkness of the waxed denim. It's a fun look for the holidays while still being comfortable.

How To Care For Waxed Denim?

Because coated denim has been treated it requires a little more care. Be aware that eventually the coating will break down. Instead of tossing these jeans into the wash, opt for an occasional dry cleaning like real leather pants. In between laundering, spot clean with a damp cloth to extend the wear and store inside out. For more information on caring for your coated denim, reference this article for best practices.

Watch: Kimberly Shares How To Care For Your Sweaters

Sweater weather is in full swing, which means that many of us are pulling out our bulky knits. If you are finding that your closet is getting a bit more cramped, or wondering how to remove any pills, Kimberly is sharing how to store and care for your sweaters to keep them looking great all winter.

Our Sweater Care Tips:

  1. Fold Sweaters When Possible (keeping them inside out will keep them fresher longer)
  2.  For larger cardigans or delicate sweaters hang them over the hanger to preserve shape
  3.  Invest in a good sweater shaver and focus on maintaince at the start and end of a season.
  4. For larger pile sweaters use scissors to keep your sweaters fresh, but only trim pills and NOT loops which create holes.
  5. Consider storing sweaters with dried lavender or cedar to repeal pests and keep your sweaters smelling fresh.

Halloween Fright: Our Personal Fashion Horror Stories

Over the years we've all had our share of fashion moments--some have been less than stellar and a few have been downright scary. However, that is all part of the journey in discovering your own personal style.

For Halloween, we thought we'd open our closets and share some of our ghosts of style that thankfully can stay in the past. They are designed to inspire and offer a little hope-yes-style can be learned!

So consider yourself treated and not tricked.

Stay Stylish,

K,M,D

I’ve had some scary fashion moments, but this one takes the cake! It was taken at Cedar Point (a local amusement park) and I remember picking out the perfect outfit for that day. The short hair with bangs, giant blue glasses and oversized t-shirt. The 80’s were tough times for style, but I definitely thought I was rocking it!
— Megan

Everyone goes through an awkward ugly duckling phase—add 90’s fashion and it’s bound to happen.

Overalls and saltwater sandals were IN that year...but the plaid and haircut are the big offenders. The stylist wanted to give me an asymmetrical cut that just didn’t translate. We’ll file this away as never again.
— Kimberly

Crimped hair, ill-fitting jeans, leopard, stripes and of course a Dunkin iced coffee— I applaud a young me for trying, but this look just isn’t working.

Waxed Denim Done Three Ways

Tired of your blue jeans? The waxed denim trend is an easy way to freshen up your wardrobe this fall.

At Canvas, we decided to try out three different pairs that fit each of our personalities and body types for a three-part blog series.

First up, Megan is sharing the pair that made her love wearing denim again.

Stay Stylish,
M&K&D

What Is Waxed Denim?

Waxed denim, also referred to as coated denim, are jeans that have been coated with paint or a wax like material to create a shiny finish. They look like leather pants, but without the high price point and the use of animal products (making them friendly for our vegan friends).

A New Take on Denim

My love affair with waxed denim started five years ago when I found a pair of black waxed rag and bone jeans. I wore them endlessly, until one day it was time to finally retire them. In the two years since I've searched endlessly for a replacement pair but, couldn't find them.

I was so excited to see waxed denim make a huge comeback this fall! Everyone from Current Elliott, Paige, DL1961, NJDJ and J Brand is doing a version. I found love (again) with a pair of Blank NYC black waxed denim that has lacing down each side. I've had a blast not only incorporating them back into my wardrobe, but also styling clients in waxed denim this season.

Yes, Everyone Can Wear Waxed Denim

As stylists, we often hear people say "I love this trend, but I don't feel like I can't wear it." I have to say, waxed denim has been done so well this season that pretty much anyone can pull it off. It does have an element of edge, but can easily be softened with a feminine silk blouse and velvet flats. For my mature clients who are looking for an office-ready look, I've paired black waxed denim with a structured blazer and heels.

Waxed Denim At Every Price Point

So, with so many options which pair is right for you? Here are my go-to Brands with coated denim styles at every price point and cut:

Lafayette 148- Known for her classic cuts, this pair is perfect for the woman who wants to incorporate the trend, but also stick to a more conservative straight leg silhouette. This style is also less shiny then some of the other options out there and has a hint of stretch.

Karen Millen- Another straight leg option perfect for the gal who wants to add a hint of subtle trend to her wardrobe. This pair has a more matte finish with a slim, but not skinny, leg.

BlankNYC- If you like edge, this is your pair. They hit at the ankle, have a lower rise, plenty of shine and faux leather lacing down each leg.

DL1961- This style is a thicker fabric with plenty of stretch. It has a mid-rise, very skinny leg and lots of shine. It is the closest you'll get to leather pants without committing to actual leather!

Can You Wear Florals In Fall? We set out to make the case...

Florals For Fall--What's Old is New (again)

Jan davidsz. de heem, Flowers in a Vase

This year, fall florals are returning in rich, dark colors. Maybe it was my trip to Holland this summer, but these prints remind me of classic still life's from Baroque Dutch masters.

This blouse from Club Monaco has Jan davidsz. de heem's hand all over it (see the image to the right for reference). So what makes a floral print fall appropriate? It's all about the color and grounded coordinates. Keep your prints seasonally relevant with jewel tones (red, blue, green) and dark backgrounds.

Fall 2017 Color Theory

We've blogged in the past about the top Pantone shades of the season. It's always helpful to know what designers are focusing on, what should be invested in, and what key colors will be available in the market.

This year the palette is a unique mix of traditional fall shades, pastels, and a fiery red. Knowing that florals would be "in" for fall and the trending fall colors worked well in my favor. I knew that when I found this blouse in the spring/summer markdowns it would be something I could wear into winter.

Stylist Tip: Having a basic sense of what people will be wearing next season makes you a more powerful sale shopper.

Mixing Mediums and Textures

Megan and I were looking for fun ways to talk about this year's fall trends, so we decided to ad lib a bit and infuse some energy into the looks. The blouse was the inspiration for this shoot (fit note: it runs big, I am wearing an extra small) and from there I added a heavy weight fringed textured skirt to keep the look less serious. This skirt, also from Club Monaco, is perfect for keeping on hand for the holidays and a worthy investment. It can easily be worn with a simple silk blouse and blazer or dressed down with an oversized sweater and booties.

Get Out of Your Style Comfort Zone

To balance to bold print of the blouse, I decided against my usual sleek shoe and added a cheeky printed sandal by Steve Madden. The price point was low enough to tempt me to play on the wild side and buy into with the Gucci inspired appliqué trend. Leopard is a great choice for fall and the contrast with the floral works well. I'll admit they are a little kitschy, but sometimes it's important to get outside of your box for a bit.

K&M

Walk This Way: Menswear Shoes To Sport This Fall

Calling all guys - is your wardrobe ready for Fall 2017? An easy way to transition between seasons is by switching out your footwear. Whether you are in the market to spruce up on a budget or splurge on an investment shoe, we are sharing our three favorite men's shoe styles for fall.

Worried about how you'll put it all together and rock the right shoe with the right ensemble? We've got you covered! We are keeping it simple and sharing what looks best with our favorite fall shoes.

Stay Stylish,
M, K & D

THE CHELSEA BOOT

"I love this style for men because you are getting a two-for-one deal." -Devon

Keep it sleek and contemporary this fall with the classic Chelsea Boot. This style is the perfect shoe for day and night. The elastic sides make this shoe super comfy for all day wear.

How To Wear It? Wear with your denim (cuffed or uncuffed) for a cool street style vibe. To easily elevate your look, pair these boots with a suit or slacks and blazer combo instead of your traditional dress shoes.

THE ESSENTIAL BROGUE

"Nothing says Fall menswear like a richly colored leather brogue"-Kimberly

Maybe it's the Scotch-Irish roots of this shoe that makes it so easy to fall in love with. Originally designed as a tough outdoor shoe perfect for autumn/winter these shoes are made to last. It's handsome in a cognac color (think burnt caramel) or a deeper brown. We prefer a brogue that has a little detail but doesn't overpower this look or the wearer.

Style Tip: Try a few on, not all have the same degree of decorative perforations.

How To Wear It? Pair a brogue with navy or brown slacks and a crisp button-down with a sport coat. To dress down the look, wear these shoes with dark denim, a casual button-down, and a smart half-zip sweater.

THE CRISP WHITE SNEAKER

"I can't get enough of this this style! It's so easy to wear and can instantly elevate even the most casual outfit." - Megan

I know, I know... I've been talking about white sneakers for a few seasons now. But this style isn't going anywhere and is an absolute must-have for all men. White sneakers check all of the boxes: they are comfortable for all-day wear, can be worn day or night, and add instant style to any wardrobe.

Pro Tip: Keep your white sneakers clean by touching up weekly with a Mr. Clean Magic White Sponge.

How To Wear It? For a daytime look, throw these on with your favorite denim or track pants. To transition to evening, add a patterned sock, dark denim or slacks, and a leather moto jacket for an edgy/sleek look.

Kimberly's Everyday Fall Fashion: The 5-second Outfit

I often ask clients when we first meet what their 5-second outfit is. This may seem like an odd question but at the heart of Canvas Styling, we are more realists than fashionistas. That sensational dinner party look may be necessary, but likely what you really need are effortless outfitting ideas for every day.

Outfitting On The Fly: Effortless Style

What do you put on when your morning seems to be working against you and you spill that cup of coffee down your blouse? Today I am asking that question and sharing my answer with you. My hope is you will find it helpful in coming up with your own looks that are equally resilient and chic.

Building Bullet Proof Looks

The secret weapon of a capsule wardrobe is universality. If you have to suddenly change your top, bottom, or shoes, having a well-planned capsule wardrobe makes that quick change easy. If you missed our capsule wardrobe series, check out this blog to learn more.

Shoes That Go The Distance

As stylists, we are constantly on our feet running around stores, crawling under racks and up SF hills to find that perfect client piece (never trust a stylist in heels).

Having a good pair of shoes to support you along the way is essential. Having a good pair of shoes that are stylish can be problematic. Which is why we are all capitalizing on the mule and loafer trend this season because they walk this line oh so well.

The pair pictured are from Banana Republic from a few years ago. They go with just about everything, but they have stretched over time. Here are a few a great alternative options (steal and investment).

The Jacket Sweater Hybrid

Move over grandpa and boyfriends, a new sweater cardigan is in town and we are smitten! I picked up this J.Crew Sweater Blazer a few weeks ago after much deliberation (the sizing is generous--but go by what shoulder and sleeve length work best. I am wearing a small). Camel has been a popular jacket essential for the past few years, but many of the coats are better suited for colder climates than SF. I love that this sweater jacket is Merino wool, so it keeps me toasty without the weight or size of a fully lined jacket. I can easily stow it away in a bag for the midday fall sunshine and pull it out when the fog returns.

Outfit Details: J.Crew Sweater Blazer $138, AG Farah High-rise Jeans $178, Black and White Linen Tee (Similar Caslon $25), Older BR Wine Flats (Similar above), Earrings Jessica Thompson Designs Triangle Pear $38
