Watch: Kimberly Shares How To Care For Your Sweaters

Sweater weather is in full swing, which means that many of us are pulling out our bulky knits. If you are finding that your closet is getting a bit more cramped, or wondering how to remove any pills, Kimberly is sharing how to store and care for your sweaters to keep them looking great all winter.

Our Sweater Care Tips:

  1. Fold Sweaters When Possible (keeping them inside out will keep them fresher longer)
  2.  For larger cardigans or delicate sweaters hang them over the hanger to preserve shape
  3.  Invest in a good sweater shaver and focus on maintaince at the start and end of a season.
  4. For larger pile sweaters use scissors to keep your sweaters fresh, but only trim pills and NOT loops which create holes.
  5. Consider storing sweaters with dried lavender or cedar to repeal pests and keep your sweaters smelling fresh.

Waxed Denim Trend: Devon's Favorite Burgundy Jeans

The unique texture and shine of waxed denim brings new life to any outfit. But why not take it a step further? Double down on style and add some color!

A Dose Of Color

This burgundy pair is my new fall go-to when i’m over my blue jeans. This color is both unexpected and surprisingly versatile. The hue is just neutral enough to match beautifully with your brightest blouses. If you’re like me and want to try the tone-on-tone trend, wax denim is a great way to experiment. The shiny finish gives some added texture to a monotone palette.

Switch Up Your Jean Routine

Waxed jeans are a great alternative to your regular denim. With the look of leather but the feel of leggings, you can’t go wrong. This trend is the perfect backdrop for your best patterns, or make it cool and casual with a classic white tee. Simple and sleek accessories, like my new Kate Spade purse, play nicely with the waxed finish.

Halloween Fright: Our Personal Fashion Horror Stories

Over the years we've all had our share of fashion moments--some have been less than stellar and a few have been downright scary. However, that is all part of the journey in discovering your own personal style.

For Halloween, we thought we'd open our closets and share some of our ghosts of style that thankfully can stay in the past. They are designed to inspire and offer a little hope-yes-style can be learned!

So consider yourself treated and not tricked.

Stay Stylish,

K,M,D

I’ve had some scary fashion moments, but this one takes the cake! It was taken at Cedar Point (a local amusement park) and I remember picking out the perfect outfit for that day. The short hair with bangs, giant blue glasses and oversized t-shirt. The 80’s were tough times for style, but I definitely thought I was rocking it!
— Megan

Everyone goes through an awkward ugly duckling phase—add 90’s fashion and it’s bound to happen.

Overalls and saltwater sandals were IN that year...but the plaid and haircut are the big offenders. The stylist wanted to give me an asymmetrical cut that just didn’t translate. We’ll file this away as never again.
— Kimberly

Crimped hair, ill-fitting jeans, leopard, stripes and of course a Dunkin iced coffee— I applaud a young me for trying, but this look just isn’t working.

London: Teatime At The Ham Yard

On my trip to London this summer, there was one item on my must do list. Beyond checking out local shopping spots for the blog, I wanted to experience a proper English tea service. Growing up, tea was an important family tradition that continues today.  Part of celebrating special occasions: birthdays, weddings, and baby showers always include a formal tea or high tea thrown by ladies of the family. Over the years, the number of tea varieties, tea sandwiches, and baked goods has gotten a little out of hand (food is love in my family) and I wanted to experience something authentic to return to the basics.

Chose a Location That Sets The Tone

I researched quite a few places and referenced several books to find the right spot that was traditional yet modern. I choose The Ham Yard after reading about it on another blog and seeing that they were awarded 'Best Afternoon Tea' at the prestigious Harden’s London Restaurant Awards 2016 (ahead of other nominees including The Ritz, The Goring and Ting). It was a bonus that the price of the afternoon tea was half of similar options. If you are in the mood for something a little more modern, trendy and PINK, I would recommend trying Sketch

Enjoy High Tea with Locals

What I loved about the Ham Yard tea was that others in the dining room were locals, not tourists. I actually felt self-conscious pulling out my camera to document the tea. If you book online inquire about the different locations to have the tea, because there are plenty of intimate side rooms for hotel guests or a roof top to enjoy your service.

Pro tip: Explore the specialty tea offering! I got the Bourbon Vanilla that was rich and paired well with the savory menu items. Cocktail pre-tea or post? This was my first cocktail addition to tea. I vote for an arrival drink of champagne or a Cucumber Gimlet to start the party.

During my trip, the hotel was exclusively offering a "Wimbledon tea service". While it was a fun seasonal experience for the sport, the menu was a little cucumber forward for most American tastes. I can't speak to the Ham Yard's regular tea but, it's bound to be a culinary adventure. Don't miss the scones and passionfruit jam.

Afternoon Additions

If you don't have time to enjoy a tea service, consider stopping into Rococo Chocolates and Yotam Ottolenghi's shop. Located on the other side of town in Belgravia, these novelty shops are perfect for an afternoon treat pretty enough to take home. I stopped by for tea and a pear tart after walking through Hyde Park. Both shops capture the inventive whimsy of British cuisine and artistry. Additionally, their preserves, seasonings, and chocolates make the perfect addition to your next tea time at home.

Waxed Denim Done Three Ways

Tired of your blue jeans? The waxed denim trend is an easy way to freshen up your wardrobe this fall.

At Canvas, we decided to try out three different pairs that fit each of our personalities and body types for a three-part blog series.

First up, Megan is sharing the pair that made her love wearing denim again.

Stay Stylish,
M&K&D

What Is Waxed Denim?

Waxed denim, also referred to as coated denim, are jeans that have been coated with paint or a wax like material to create a shiny finish. They look like leather pants, but without the high price point and the use of animal products (making them friendly for our vegan friends).

A New Take on Denim

My love affair with waxed denim started five years ago when I found a pair of black waxed rag and bone jeans. I wore them endlessly, until one day it was time to finally retire them. In the two years since I've searched endlessly for a replacement pair but, couldn't find them.

I was so excited to see waxed denim make a huge comeback this fall! Everyone from Current Elliott, Paige, DL1961, NJDJ and J Brand is doing a version. I found love (again) with a pair of Blank NYC black waxed denim that has lacing down each side. I've had a blast not only incorporating them back into my wardrobe, but also styling clients in waxed denim this season.

Yes, Everyone Can Wear Waxed Denim

As stylists, we often hear people say "I love this trend, but I don't feel like I can't wear it." I have to say, waxed denim has been done so well this season that pretty much anyone can pull it off. It does have an element of edge, but can easily be softened with a feminine silk blouse and velvet flats. For my mature clients who are looking for an office-ready look, I've paired black waxed denim with a structured blazer and heels.

Waxed Denim At Every Price Point

So, with so many options which pair is right for you? Here are my go-to Brands with coated denim styles at every price point and cut:

Lafayette 148- Known for her classic cuts, this pair is perfect for the woman who wants to incorporate the trend, but also stick to a more conservative straight leg silhouette. This style is also less shiny then some of the other options out there and has a hint of stretch.

Karen Millen- Another straight leg option perfect for the gal who wants to add a hint of subtle trend to her wardrobe. This pair has a more matte finish with a slim, but not skinny, leg.

BlankNYC- If you like edge, this is your pair. They hit at the ankle, have a lower rise, plenty of shine and faux leather lacing down each leg.

DL1961- This style is a thicker fabric with plenty of stretch. It has a mid-rise, very skinny leg and lots of shine. It is the closest you'll get to leather pants without committing to actual leather!

Outfit Details: Joie metallic silk blouse, BlankNYC lace up waxed jeans, BR Velvet Flats (similar), J.Crew lucite link necklace (similar)

London: A Canvas Shopping Guide To Marylebone and Mayfair

My final morning in London this summer I got up early, grabbed a takeaway down the street, and had my nose pressed against to the door of Selfridges waiting for them to open. Why? I could have had an easy morning enjoying the last bit of good tea, but I was on a quest to find new inspiration. Yes--we have wonderful brands here in the states, but honestly, if you are shopping the market as often as Megan and I am, you'll quickly realize the lack of diversity.

Below is a listing of two main shopping areas in London that I would recommend experiencing and a few stand out brands not to be missed. There is so much to see in each of these neighborhoods that I could have written a blog on each store--however, we'll keep it light and share my highlights for today.

Stay Stylish,

Kimberly

A postcard from the London Underground

Mayfair (Regent Street, Savile Row, and Oxford Street)--Shopping for the History Buffs

I was determined not to follow existing fashion but to create new ones.
— Arthur Lasenby Liberty

This landmark store has gotten ever the more popular in the US thanks to some good marketing and partnerships with J.Crew and even Target. I was intrigued to check it out and it ended up being one of my favorite London stops of the trip. Liberty Of London is a brand that started in 1875 and is known for its beautiful floral printed fabrics. Inside the Tudor style store, however, is a merchant's dream where you will find floors of departments ranging from cosmetics to homewares. It would be easy to get lost here for a day exploring new brands but if you are tight on time head to the top of the store to see the famous fabrics. If you are crafty, their collection of vintage patterns and notions are wonderful.

Savile Row

Not far from Liberty of London, Savile Row parallels Regent street. I happened upon this street after a long trek from the Theater district and enjoyed passing famous menswear brands known for their craftsmanship and beautiful fabrics. If you are in the market for something bespoke start here.

Marylebone--Shopping for the Modern Londoner

This was the area of town I stayed in and for this trip it was the perfect spot to be in the heart of London without experiencing the rush of a large city. Situated not far from Hyde Park there is plenty to see, savor, and shop. I didn't do much personal shopping, but I did do a lot of scouting for the blog.

Selfridges

I was excited to see what the second largest store in London had to sell and share that with all of you. Sorry Harrods, you lost out on this trip... Mr. Selfridge won the coin toss. Thankfully a local friend and PBS steered me in the right direction.

The very best "Amercian" way I can describe this store is to think of it as an upscale Nordstrom. The store itself, opened in 1908, is like stepping back in time and experiencing retail on a grand scale. Mr. Selfridge a Chicago native, moved his family to London at the turn of the century to start an empire and revolutionize how we do retail--much of which remains today. Here is a quick link so some fun facts about the store if you visit.

Many for the brands carried at Selfridges are sold in the US, but below are a few British designers that are worth watching.

“Print can be as definitive as a cut or a drape and allows a woman to filter beauty found in design, in a subversive way. All my prints are constructed through digital technology... It opens up a huge spectrum for possibility; I can create possibility out of impossibility, surrealism out of realism and both vice versa.”
— Mary Katrantzou

There is so much energy in Mary Katrantzou's fresh designs that they immediately caught my eye. A native of Greece, this London based designer is one to watch! There is a soft feminitiy to her bold and creative designs. Maybe it's our Rhode Island connection (she did a stint at RISD), but her print designs are a collector item as her career continues to gain momentum. She has done numerous collaborations in the UK and frequently partners with addias for street wear.

The Power Of Femininity: We believe that being strong and self-determined, doesn’t mean you have to park your femininity at the door—it’s all about having the confidence to express yourself.
— Malene Birger

Okay--this selection is a CHEAT--but when it comes to fashion sometimes you have to bend the rules. I was hoping to only include London based designers but, I wouldn't want to you to miss out on a wonderful brand! I love the force de resistance of this powerhouse Danish brand. The collections are cohesive, classic, with just the right bit of edge. If Rag and Bone hopped across the pond they may end up there.

Bold, confident, refined. Modern futurism balanced with timeless minimalism.
— Solace London

My final pick is one brand that you can occasionally source here in the states. Solace London"s modern architectural designs and bold use of color make them an easy brand to translate to California dressing. If you are curious to try a design, Rent the Runway currently has a few of their gowns available.

Can You Wear Florals In Fall? We set out to make the case...

Florals For Fall--What's Old is New (again)

Jan davidsz. de heem, Flowers in a Vase

This year, fall florals are returning in rich, dark colors. Maybe it was my trip to Holland this summer, but these prints remind me of classic still life's from Baroque Dutch masters.

This blouse from Club Monaco has Jan davidsz. de heem's hand all over it (see the image to the right for reference). So what makes a floral print fall appropriate? It's all about the color and grounded coordinates. Keep your prints seasonally relevant with jewel tones (red, blue, green) and dark backgrounds.

Fall 2017 Color Theory

We've blogged in the past about the top Pantone shades of the season. It's always helpful to know what designers are focusing on, what should be invested in, and what key colors will be available in the market.

This year the palette is a unique mix of traditional fall shades, pastels, and a fiery red. Knowing that florals would be "in" for fall and the trending fall colors worked well in my favor. I knew that when I found this blouse in the spring/summer markdowns it would be something I could wear into winter.

Stylist Tip: Having a basic sense of what people will be wearing next season makes you a more powerful sale shopper.

Mixing Mediums and Textures

Megan and I were looking for fun ways to talk about this year's fall trends, so we decided to ad lib a bit and infuse some energy into the looks. The blouse was the inspiration for this shoot (fit note: it runs big, I am wearing an extra small) and from there I added a heavy weight fringed textured skirt to keep the look less serious. This skirt, also from Club Monaco, is perfect for keeping on hand for the holidays and a worthy investment. It can easily be worn with a simple silk blouse and blazer or dressed down with an oversized sweater and booties.

Get Out of Your Style Comfort Zone

To balance to bold print of the blouse, I decided against my usual sleek shoe and added a cheeky printed sandal by Steve Madden. The price point was low enough to tempt me to play on the wild side and buy into with the Gucci inspired appliqué trend. Leopard is a great choice for fall and the contrast with the floral works well. I'll admit they are a little kitschy, but sometimes it's important to get outside of your box for a bit.

How To Elevate Your Basics For Fall

Today, Devon is taking over the blog to share how to easily elevate your everyday basics for fall.

Stay Stylish,
M, K & D

As much as I love fashion, there are days when I just want to wear my favorite t-shirt and jeans. If I’m in one of these moods but still have places to go and people to see, I’ll throw on an unexpected jacket.

Make a Statement

Printed and colorful outerwear will be everywhere this fall. Give your simple staples a wardrobe refresh with something fun and unexpected. A statement coat can make even the laziest of fashionistas look effortlessly cool.

Experiment With a Detailed Jacket

I love this boho jacket's fringe detail and texture. Can you believe I got this at Target? (and it comes in plus sizes too!) This unique piece works great as a light jacket or unexpected blazer. Experiment with your coat-- they are more versatile than you’d think!

Choose Classic Accessories

Accessories are always a fun way to amp up a basic ensemble, but sometimes less can be more. Balance your bold outerwear with timeless accessories. A simple heel, watch or handbag let the real statement piece shine.

The Everyday Fall Dress

Outfit details: Addidas Originals 3-Stripes Dress, $60 (also available on ASOS), Goodfellow & Co. sneakers, $30

I often hear clients and friends say that they love dresses because they are easy to wear (Kimberly can always rock a good dress!). I have never really been a dress person outside of formal events or beach vacations. So I decided to branch outside of my comfort zone and ordered this Addidas dress during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale over the summer.

Athleisure Doesn't Have to Be Yoga Pants

We often think of athleisure as yoga pants and an elevated sweatshirt. What drew me to the dress is that it takes the althleisure style that I love to wear and adds a feminine silhouette. For for the past month it has absolutely become a closet staple. I've worn it everywhere from a mid-week lunch to wine tasting and HH with friends.

Take Your Dress from Day to Night

The Addidas dress looks great with my white sneakers (the pair photographed are actually men's sneakers from Target's Goodfellow & Co. line and I am OBSESSED with them), but I can also pair it with heels for an evening look. Since it is an all black silhouette, I would opt for a colored pair of stappy heels or even an embroidered mule.

How To Pick The Right Dress For Your Body

Dresses make great pieces for Fall and can take you into Winter easily when paired with tights and boots. Here are a few tips on finding the right dress for your body shape.

1. Show off your curvy figure by opting for a dress with a belted waist.

2. Dresses that flare out slightly, such as A-lines, are great for balancing out broad shoulders.

3. If you have an athletic body look for dress with draping or ruching. A cinched mid-section gives the illusion of a more curvy shape.

4. A fit-and-flare dress is ideal for women with thin waists and small upper bodies.
