You Know You're A Stylist When...

The 5 Signs When You Know You Are A Personal Stylist

1.     You stop random people on the street to fix their outfit
Kimberly- I see a lot of people walking around with unreleased pleats. PSA--there should be no visible "X's" on your pleats.  It makes designer's REALLY sad and is like walking out the door with the hanger still in your jacket.

2.     You offer your opinion to strangers shopping in stores… unsolicited
Kimberly - When I was on vacation in Dublin, I was stopped by a woman shopping for a dress who wanted a second option.  I was happy to help, I must give off the stylist vibe.

Megan - I just did this the other day in Saks. A woman was trying on a pair of rag & bone heels and before I knew what I was doing I walked over and suggested she try the flats instead.

3.     You are in certain stores so much you think (and act) like you work there.
Kimberly- I've had some sales associates ask me where a certain item is located in the store.  I could probably draw merch planograms for most of the retailers in SF.

Megan - I've been known to undress a mannequin without asking permission first. In my defense I need the size it had on and didn't want to bother anyone.

4.     You talk to the sale’s associates at Bloomingdale’s more than your family.
Megan - My store contacts are like rockstars to me. I literally wouldn't survive without them. Though I am sure they could survive without my 8am texts asking if a certain item has arrived.

Kimberly - I'm so thankful for my network of contacts they help make magic happen. And yes, I've graduated to pure emoji texts with some.

5.     You have actual conversations with clothes.
Megan - I constantly talk to clothes when I am in stores pulling for a client. "Ooh you're pretty!" or "Yes, you are coming with me!" People must think I am crazy!

Earth Day: A Green Meeting

Yesterday we decided to celebrate Earth Day with an outdoor meeting at one of our favorite green spots in San Francisco, Flora Grubb.  It was the perfect inspiration spot for planning and dreaming up style ideas for the upcoming months.

Sunglasses for Your Face Shape

As the weather warms up and the sun starts to shine later, sunglasses take the front seat as one of our favorite accessories. Picking out the perfect pair can be tricky, so we've put together a guide to finding the perfect sunnies for your face shape. Check it out...

Oval Face
If your face is oval, then you are lucky because pretty much any style of sunglasses looks good with your face shape. Try a pair of aviators or cat eye shaped frames to see which suits your personality better.

Square Face
Square faces can be a little tough because of your broad jaw line and forehead.  Big round frames and cat eye frames tend to look best.

Round Face
Round faces should opt for a style that is big and on the rectangular side. Try on some men's styles, which tend to look great on a feminine face.

Long, Narrow Face
Long, narrow faces look best in large, oversized glasses. Channel the 70's vibe that is happening right now with wide, round vintage frames.

Heart Shaped Face
Bigger frames always look great on heart shaped faces. They add width to the bottom of your face without being too heavy. Also try aviators, which have round edges that flatter your face shape.

Stress-Free Spring Closet Cleaning

Tips for cleaning your closet

There’s more to spring cleaning than tossing your winter clothes into the back of your closet and calling it a day. It’s a good opportunity to go through your entire closet and see what's working, what you aren't wearing anymore and what can be put away until Fall. So in the spirit of out with the old and in with the new, here are our 5 stress-free steps for cleaning out your closet.

1.     Assess your current style and how it translates through the clothes in your closet. If you've become less boho and classic, it may be time to replace those long flowy skirts for tailored pants.

2.     If you haven’t worn it in at least two years, then it is time to let it go. We always tell ourselves we may need it one day, for that one event, but chances are it will just end up sitting in your closet for another 2 years.

3.     Hold on to heirloom pieces. We all have those special pieces that we don't always (or ever) wear, but we just can't get rid of. For example, that dress you wore on your honeymoon or the vintage blouse that belonged to your mom. Take any heirloom pieces from your closet and store them in an airtight bin. This will help preserve them and free up room in your closet.

4.    Ditch wire for wood. Wooden hangers are more gentle on you clothes and preserve their shape for longer. Plus, while you're busy swapping hangers you will get a good look at what's hiding in your closet.

5.     Organize by category. Organize your closet so that all of your pants, shirts, skirts, etc. are arranged together. Then take it one step farther and organize each category by color. It may be time consuming at first, but it save time later when you aren’t digging around for your favorite top

Now tell us... What are your secrets to making spring cleaning easy?

All Work and No Play...

Here at Canvas we believe in taking time to appreciate the moments. Big or small, we set aside time each month to unwind and be grateful for where we are. Earlier this week, Kimberly and I took a break to officially toast the launch of Canvas Styling with brunch, manis and pedis on a sunny morning! After months of hard work, it was a great way to start a new chapter. And if anyone ask, Zazie does a killer brunch!

Bye Bye Skinny Jeans

One of the most common things I hear from my clients is "I hate skinny jeans!". While the skinny will never disappear, the good news is that there other denim style options out there that look great and (gasp!) are comfortable to wear.  Here are three favorites...

1. The Girlfriend Jean - a slimmer cut than the boyfriend jean, it's a relaxed fit with a more tapered leg.

2. The Slimmy Jean - the perfect hybrid between a cigarette pant and boyfriend jean, it's roomy without being baggy

3. The Flare - the "it" jean for spring, the flare creates more of a dressed-up vibe. The only downside to these is that they need to be tailored to the perfect length and look better with heels. That said... these jeans will give you sky high legs and look great!

Wardrobe Upgrade on a Budget

San Francisco is definitely not known for being cheap. But looking good doesn't always have to cost a lot.

I love this article by Refinery29 on how to upgrade your wardrobe on an entry-level salary. It includes some great suggestions like buy vintage, stalk markdowns (something I am always doing) and stocking up off season.

What's your favorite suggestion?
