Keeping The Calm (Part II): Style Essentials for Social Distancing

We are six weeks into our shelter-in-place order in San Francisco (I know many of us don’t need a reminder). Maybe you are starting to find a rhythm to our “new normal” —you are happily cooking at home more than ever and getting dressed in the morning has never been easier or more casual? Or maybe you are simply holding your breath trying to keep it all together and cling to any structure you can find? I’ve felt both of these extremes deeply and settled into living somewhere in between.

Next week shelter-in-place is scheduled to be lifted but it’s uncertain how some city ordinances will be extended. Your daily routine and uniform may need an adjustment and those temporary pieces you have quite possibly been ‘living in’ may need a refresh or a more permanent solution.

With that in mind, I thought it might be helpful to share some practical style tips as we prepare for what the next few months of social distancing may look like. With longer lead times on orders and retail stores deferring new shipments to reserve cash flow, making sure your wardrobe is in good shape may take a little advance planning.

Be Well and Stay Stylish,

Make an Appointment with Your Closet

While eating at home has become the norm, changing eating habits and less daily activity may have contributed to a little waistline creeping.

You may have bonded with athleisure wear in this season but it does not always speak the truth like a tightening pair of jeans will. Those items you were wearing regularly two months ago may not be ready to wear now. Stage an honest fit session. Try on everything you may want to wear this spring and determine what works right now—consider organizing pieces by outside and inside (home) wardrobe. Be easy with yourself and give yourself some grace, as we have learned now is not forever. Group together anything that doesn’t fit comfortably and relocate it to the back of your closet or a temporary container. Plan to revisit this grouping in a few weeks when your activity is more regular.

Make a list of any essential wardrobe items you need to purchase to tide you over in the meantime. Limit layering and focus on dresses, drawstring pants, and jumpsuits which all can be forgiving intermediary items as you ease back to a more active lifestyle. Look on Poshmark, discount retailer sites (Nordstrom Rack), or store sale pages to downgrade your investment on key pieces if you know you’ll drop or gain a size quickly.

If you find yourself at and impasse or roadblock, feel free to reach out. We are offering remote closet reviews/edits to help clients streamline and pare down.

Invest in a Washable Mask

As we prepare for shelter-in-place lifting and social distancing to continue, investing in a reusable mask seems like a worthwhile effort. There has been so much back in forth in the media on masks and what you should be sporting and what you should not that I’ve been hesitant to suggest specific masks that clients should purchase or make at home. Ultimately, I'm not a medical expert so use CDC guidelines for best practices and how to make your own. Generally, thicker and natural fabrics are better.

Can a face mask be fashionable?

Well, friends given the circumstances and current morale if it gives you joy and helps others, I say GO for it! It is one way to show a little personality and soften often sterile-looking Personal Protective Equipment. I purchased the above set from local Oakland designer, Lesley Evers for $60—every sale helps keep her seamstresses employed and proceeds go toward masks for medical care workers. While you can find cheaper masks online, I would rather pay more and have it go to help our neighbors. The more you buy the more you safe so think of family members or friends so may need one too.

Sentry, a workwear company out of LA, is also manufacturing cotton face masks and donating one mask for every purchase to first responders and non-profit organizations. Check back daily for re-stocking of sold-out masks.

ProTip: Having at least two washable masks on hand will help with laundry rotation. Consider purchasing one solid and one print to add a little variety to your daily routine.

Learn to Love Your Laundry

In the past few years, I’ve added a “Laundry Habits /Use and Care” piece to my new client home consultations. Love it or hate it laundry is necessity. If we are looking to invest in a new wardrobe, I want clients to understand how to take care of it so it lasts as long as possible. Having the right tools makes all the difference in caring for your clothing for the long term.

While taking a trip to the dry cleaners likely isn’t a top priority right now, it doesn’t mean you can’t learn to wash and wear at home (and save some $$). The Laundress NYC is my current go-to for keeping laundry delicates happy and healthy. I recommend starting out with the Dry Cleaning Detox Kit, if you use this link you’ll get $20 off your first order if you are a new customer. Also, if you do not have a clothing drying rack, this one is similar to the one I own and love. There is plenty of space to hang both athletic wear and delicates and the rack neatly folds up for easy storage.

Chances are you are doing more than your fair share of laundry these days to keep safe and healthy. If you need a few tips on how to properly do your wash (with or without a laundry machine) here is an article I found helpful on vogue.

Keeping The Calm: A Work from Home Style First Aid Kit

We are one week into the start of our ‘Shelter In Place’ order here in San Francisco—for those of you who are local—high fives all around for keeping it together!!

It’s been a big adjustment here at the Canvas office, shifting clients to remote shopping sessions and pushing others out for in-person shopping trips later in the season. Waiting is something I am not particularly good at and my default is contingency planning, a skill that has served me well styling. But right now so much of life is calling us to live in the present because the near future looks fuzzy and sometimes a little wildly scary.

In the wake of social distancing and calls to shelter I gathered together some basics that give me a surprising amount of comfort. These little familiar luxuries have fueled me this past week and kept me grounded so I could focus on carving out a new work/life routine. Keeping a schedule has helped me immensely, starting the day with a devotional or meditation, before jumping into my inbox or task list.

Do you have anything that has helped keep you focused while working from home? How are you doing with this new routine? Are you excited that you get a free pass to athleisure style or do you miss having a clearer work/life wardrobe?

Drop me a note and let me know how you are doing! A few clients have reached out and l love hearing from you. If there is anything you would love to hear about re: style/fashion/cooking. I have a little more time on my hands these days to blog, something that I’ve missed over the course of a busy 2019.

If you are interested in setting up a remote styling session or closet clean-out drop me a note here and we can chat more.

Be good to yourself and your neighbor and as always,

Stay Stylish,

Canvas 2019 Holiday Gift Guide: Last Minute Picks For Everyone on Your List

If you are like many of our clients, this holiday came exceptionally fast with little time to plan ahead. With one less week between Thanksgiving and Christmas, many retailers are feeling the pinch and pushing more sales to move inventory. I feel lucky that all my shopping and holiday baking (my gift to stores every year) is done but don’t fear if you are still in the hustle to get it all done.

Our 2019 Gift Guide for Everyone in Your Family

Being in stores on a regular basis does have its perks and watching inventory flow is one of them. So to simplify your shopping, I put together my top gift picks for parents, siblings, and babies. In a range of prices and styles, these are all gifts that I've either already purchased for a loved one or would love to receive under the tree.

Enjoy!

~Kimberly

What to Give Mom & Dad

Regardless of their taste, Mom and Dad can sometimes feel overwhelming to buy for. In past years, our family started to draw names to keep things special and affordable. This year I bought my parents an everyday sized Le Creuset Cast-Iron Oven (my mom loves to cook and my Dad loves her cooking) so that it's something they can enjoy together.

1. LL Bean Slippers, $79 These classic slippers (the women’s version shown here) are the essential Winter Slipper to keep your parents toasty on their feet. LL Bean has sold nearly 4 million of these slippers in the past 5 years, so they must be doing something right.

2. Le Creuset Cast-Iron Essential Oven, 3 1/2-Qt. ($149 reg. $290) I purchased one of these ovens for myself over Thanksgiving and have been enjoying the portable size for gatherings.

3. Audible Gift Membership ($15-$150) Keep your parents in the know and engaged with an Audible subscription. My parents who are constantly on the go have gotten through a staggering number of books this year thanks to their subscription.

What to Give Your Sibling or BFF

Every year, I try to get my sister and brother-in-law something that’s unique, practical, and treat worthy. They have different styles but are in the throes of toddler management at home, so a little luxury can go a looong way.

1. Kiehl’s Travel Size Men's Grab & Go Essentials Set, $47 Started in 1851 as an old world apothecary in NYC this brand has high-quality products designed for both men and women. This travel set is also a great starter set for a guy with minimal product tendencies.

2. Bombas Color Block Ankle Socks, $12 Need to freshen up a loved ones sneaker game? These ankle socks come in a mix of shade but why not add a pop of color. I love the extra cushion designed with comfort in mind.

3. Mark & Graham Leather Charger Roll-Up, $49 Help keep loved ones organized and stylish with this sleek leather roll up. The monogram is a nice touch, but not necessary when you are on a gifting deadline.

What to Give Your Niece or Nephew

The holidays really are so much more fun with children around. If you don't have a special child in your life, but would like to make a difference, I am a BIG fan of the Enchantment program with the SF Ballet. If you are interested in sending a child to the ballet, read on. To treat the littles in your life or the young at heart see below for my favorite gifts.

1. Be Kind by Pat Zietlow Miller, Jen Hill (Illustrator): I like gifting books to kids that can be read together and/or inspire imagination and curiosity. I gifted this sweet book to my niece to encourage and teach the importance of kindness…it may be a great gift for adults too ;)

2. LumiPets Cute Animal Silicone Baby Night Light: For little ones who have trouble falling asleep, this adorable squishy friend could be the sleep aid everyone in the family has been waiting for. The soothing light color will change when the bear is tapped or via remote.

3. The Things I Know Matching Game: When I give gifts to kids I like them to serve a larger purpose or be educational (yes I am THAT Aunt). This colorful game is perfect for young elementary school kids.

How We Are Beating The Crowds This Black Friday

At Canvas we have traditionally steered away from the Black Friday madness and this year will be no different. For us, the holiday really is about being thankful for what you DO have and this year we have so much to be thankful for. The devastating fires to the north and south in our state have taken so much from those in California. Our hearts go out to everyone affected.

If you are feeling moved to give to those suffering great loss, look to your own communities and consider giving back with time or sponsoring a family in need. The Durham United Fire Relief Fund is one local fundraising effort for the town next to Paradise and is focusing on finding families shelter.

This year Megan’s family decided that rather then give each other Christmas gifts, they will help create happy holiday for a family displaced by the fires.

If you are in need of purchasing a few things and supporting the economy, we recommend shopping small or from the comfort of your home (yoga pants encouraged). Many stores are starting early with promotions now, so you may be done shopping before the holiday even begins. Below are a few things we will be adding to our carts.

Wishing you all a wonderful Thanksgiving, may you cherish all those gathered around your table.

Stay Stylish,

Kimberly’s Picks

Reading over my list, you’ll see that I’m a sheer pragmatist in purchases this year (like most years). What I love about Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals is that if you are smart you already know what you need and only buy what is on your list. Be careful not to get sucked into the hype of a deal—if it wasn’t on sale would you buy it? If not, keep on moving.

In The Kitchen

As you may have learned in reading this blog I really enjoy cooking and hosting gatherings. Living in San Francisco, apartments are small and that means kitchen space needs to be very efficient. Last January we did a major purge in my apartment—clearing out ownerless Tupperware and appliances to make more space. This Black Friday I’ll be on the lookout for a Kitchen Aid Mixer, Blender and/or new toaster oven. So exciting, I know, but basics that you regularly use are a great thing to purchase on promo.

Outdoor Gear

Balancing store time with outdoor time is very important to me. It’s my way of recovering from artificial lighting and overstimulating stores and loosing myself in nature. Waterproof hiking shoes have been on my list forever (10yrs!) but I am picky and want a shoes that are comfortable and blister free.

Megan’s Picks

I have to be honest, I can get a bit sucked into researching what I want to purchase from Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales. And by sucked in, I mean spending hours in front of my computer shopping for the best deals. To be fair, 75% of my shopping if gifts for family and friends. I do always try to find one or two special things for myself as well.

Kid’s Gifts

My nieces have officially entered the “tween” phase, which means that I have to up my gift giving a bit. They have strong opinions on what they like to wear, and don’t seem to be interested in the fact that Aunt Meggie styles people for a living. I don’t want to invest too much in clothing they will quickly outgrow or not want to wear in a few months, so I always take advantage of the sales to buy them a few special pieces.

Pro Tip: Always check the return policy on sale items. Often Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals are marked as final sale.

Beauty and Skincare

Sephora Beauty Advent Calendar

Over the past year or two I have become a huge beauty and skincare fanatic. (Kimberly and I have blogged a lot this year about our love for natural and organic skincare products.) I always take advantage of the sales to stock up on my favorite products that otherwise wouldn’t go on sale. And this year in particular, I have my eye on the popular Beauty Advent Calendars. I also have my eye out for any Tata Harper skincare sales - my favorite for natural skincare!

Summer Favorites: Fog-Free Weekend Spots and the Sunnies to Wear

It's full swing FOGUST in San Francisco. While the rest of the Bay Area is soaking up the last of the summer sun, we are living in a world of fog.  How do you survive until summer returns in September and October? We put together a list of our favorite sunny spots in the city and beyond, plus the best sunglasses to wear on your adventure.

Stay Stylish,
K&M

1. Go on a Hike!

Don't let the fog slow you down. One way we love to find the sunshine is to explore a trail in Marin, Berkeley, or along the peninsula. Grizzly Peak in Berkeley is a great beginners hike with incredible views of the Bay Bridge and the Golden Gate. For more experienced hikers, try the Marin Coastal Trail.

Sunglasses for Hiking:
Men: Smith Lowdown2 Polarized ChromaPop Sunglasses, $169

These sporty yet stylish shades will keep your eyes protected and keep up with the pace. The hydrophilic nose pads keep the glasses from slipping while the ultra light frame keeps you from getting that dreaded sunglass imprint.

Women: Oakley Latch, $163
The frames are super lightweight for all day wear, and their special lens technology helps enhance visual details for a crystal view, while blocking out too much sunshine. An extra feature allows you to clip the shades to your shirt, so they'll stay secure when you're hiking under shade.

2. Hit Off The Grid Presidio Picnic

Not only is the Presidio Picnic free, it takes place every Sunday rain or shine on the Presidio’s Main Parade Ground, with amazing views of the park, the city, and the Bay.  Enjoy the incredible views, 25+ food vendors, music, crafts for kids, and even a free yoga class from 11-12.

Sunglasses a Chill Park Day:
Men: Warby Parker Abe, $145
The Abe is an aviator style with a fresh square silhouette. These offer 100% UV protection, are scratch resistant in case you drop them, and have a cool silver frame.

Women: Quay Australia Somerset Aviators, $60
Megan recently picked up this style on a weekend trip to Vegas, making it her second pair of Quay's. The highly reflective lenses make them great for protecting your eyes, while the sleek brow bar amps up the style.

3. Explore a Farmer's Market or Flea Market

If you are willing to drive a little, why not pick up picnicking supplies for wine tasting at the Healdsburg Farmer's Market? Located just off the main street, local vendors offer a mix of fresh flowers, cheeses, and breads perfect to beautify your spread.

If you want to explore something closer to the city and still find some sunshine, Kimberly is a big fan of the Alameda Antiques Faire held the first Sunday of the month. Find your latest vintage piece, grab lunch at the market and take in the views of the city (if it's not fogged in).

Women: J.Crew Seaside Round Cateye, $65

Perfect for adding a little color to your life and a retro nod to summer. These frames are easy on the eyes and the pocket book while providing standard UV protection.

Men: TOM's Dawson Milky Honey Fade, $139.95

Understated in a soft honey fade, these chic sunglasses are a softer take on a masculine wood frame. This slightly square shape does more than make you look good. With every pair of eyewear you purchase, TOMS will help restore sight to someone in need. One for One®

The BBQ Ready Summer Salad

If you signed up to bring a side salad for the fourth or are simply looking for a lighter dinner this summer we are sharing a recipe that has been on repeat in our kitchens.

Great style isn't limited to your wardrobe and having the right mix of simple ingredients makes healthy eating easy. This recipe was created last minute for an unplanned dinner party. The mix of sweet squash and savory arugula is a fresh combination and pairs well with grilled chicken for a heartier dish...or alone with a cool glass of rosè.

Get ready to say goodbye to the heavy BBQ pasta salad of the past, this one may be a crowd pleaser!

K&M

  • 5T Olive Oil
  • Kosher Salt

Father's Day: A Gift Guide for Dads of All Ages

In preparation for Father's Day, we decided to take a cue from our Mother's Day blog and share our favorite gift ideas for the guys. Dads are notoriously hard to shop for - if they want it that badly they usually end up just buying it for themselves. This year we dug into our digital shopping closet to help you find the perfect gift for your favorite man.

Stay Stylish,
M&K

The New Dad

Since sleep may be elusive, his world may now need an alarm clock that doesn't cry. Keep feedings organized and biometrics in check with a smart watch. There are many options on the market right now at different price points. If you like to do a little more research, check out the best bets for 2018.

Protip: Make sure to look at the price to replace watchbands, which can get worn over time.

The Toddler Dad

Once the toddler years start, he is going to be running after his little one a lot! Give dad the gift of comfort, with some style thrown in, with these easy to wear, easy to care, clothes and accessories that will hold up to a day of playing at the park, running around the house, or chasing a now-walking toddler.

The Dad of Teens

Once his little girl or boy hits the teenage years, a few grey hairs start to arrive as dad prepares for later curfews, kids learning to drive, and (gasp!) dating! Give him the gift of pampering and help him get ahead of any worry lines that may start to settle in. Dads can't help it... they worry because they love you!

The Grandfather

Grandfather's come in all shapes, sizes, and interests. The cool thing about seeing your own parents cross this threshold is how it can bring out a side that you don't have a memory of. Time is precious, and although you may have a few resisters, jotting down his life lessons is a great keepsake that will mean more than a ball cap or polo (but those are always great back ups). For older grandkids-this is a great project to do together.

Fresh Scents: Our Favorite Spring Summer Fragrances

Every season both Megan and I like to change our fragrances to reflect the changing environment. Because we are often working with clients we are careful in what we select so it is neutral and clean and not distracting from a styling session. Scent can be highly linked to memories and emotions so it is always safer to tread lightly.

As we continue our search for healthier products this year our scents have started to change as well.  I am finding myself more drawn to wearing a blend of essential oils most days that adapt to my own ph (because your scent should be as unique as you are). If you are curious to get a little more of the nitty-gritty on natural fragrance options and what your nose knows--check out this Credo Blog covering the topic.

Below is a listing of our favorite mainstream scents -some are unisex and others are better for outside client sessions, but all are perfect for a mix of your spring-summer adventures.

Enjoy and stay stylish,

K&M

Megan's Pick's

Van Cleef & Arpels Gardénia Pétale Eau de Parfum, $150.00

I love the smell of gardenias and have had a hard time finding a perfume has a simple, pure scent. Lush and feminine, this perfume is the truest to the natural gardenia scent that I have found. It includes green notes, citrus notes, lily of the valley, jasmine, and gardenia.

 Gucci Bloom, $83

Gucci always has wonderful fragrances. Bloom is slightly more masculine (but not overwhelming) while still being crisp, clean and, refreshing. It has a blend of white florals, galbanum leaf, cassis, musk, and sandalwood.

Kimberly's Picks

MAISON MARGIELA Replica Flying Eau de Parfum, $180

Fresh and crisp this unisex fragrance has had me taking a detour in stores for a midday spritz. The top notes of bright neroli and bergamot remind me of a Negroni on the Italian coastline. The fresh citrus scent is light and airy but strong enough to hold up on a warm summer evening.

Aesop Tacit Eau de Parfum, $115

Clean, peppery, and slightly herbal this parfum by Aesop is another great unisex scent.  This is a low maintenance fragrance with earthy top notes of citrus and basil. Because of this, it's a good match for the contemporary minimalist. This parfum has less staying power than other fragrances and softens on the skin with long wear.

Mix It Up: How To Ace High-Low Dressing

If you've been following our blog for awhile, then you know that I love high-low dressing. It's an easy way to wear those dressier pieces that live in your closet. You know which ones I am talking about... the nicer items you may have spent a little more on but always seem to be saving for a special occasion. I say embrace the day and wear what you want when you want!

What Is High-Low Dressing

High-low dressing is the art of mixing dressier pieces with more casual items to create an outfit that is uniquely you. Typically "high" pieces are more pricey and considered statement pieces such a designer purse, embellished jacket, or in my case the sequin skirt I am wearing. "Low" pieces are basics, such as a t-tee or your favorite denim.

To Invest or Not Invest

We always recommend investing in timeless staples that you will wear over and over (such a tailored black pants, classic handbag, or a sharp blazer). Spend less on trend pieces that you will only wear for a season or two. Even then, make sure that it's something that is true to your own personal style. Don’t buy into anything that doesn't feel "you" when you put it on.

Tips for High-Low Dressing

High-low dressing is a lot easier than it can first appear. The key is to find the right balance. Here are some tips that will have you high-low dressing like a pro:

1. Pick Your WOW! Factor: What is your standout piece going to be? This is the item that the rest of your outfit will be based around. In this case, I wore a sequin skirt that I'd bought for my upcoming vacation but couldn't wait to wear.

1. Build with Basics: Think of these as the supporting characters. They are your more simple pieces, such as a bright white t-shirt or basic pair of denim that won't compete with your statement item. Since my sequin skirt was the focal point of my outfit, I went with a simple sweater and white K Swiss sneakers.

2. Be Creative With Layers: You can make your less expensive pieces elegant by wearing them in creative layers. Add interest with contrasting hues. For example. I wore my $20 Target denim jacket over a bright yellow Vince. cashmere sweater.

4. Finish with Accessories: When in doubt, reach for an accessory. Often times these are the more expensive pieces in your wardrobe - and the ones you tend to wear the least often. A bold necklace or embellished pin can instantly make your outfit pop and stand out. I topped off my look with my face Gucci sunnies.

Little Tokens Of Love: Mother's Day Gifts for All Ages

Mother's Day seems to have snuck up on us this year! As Kimberly and I have shared in the past, we are close to our moms and always like to treat them on Mother's Day.

So, what do you get the woman who deserves it all? Finding the perfect gift for mom can sometimes be tricky. This year, we have put together our guide for gifting to moms of all ages and stages.

Stay Stylish,
Canvas Styling

The New Mom

For the new mom, comfort and practicality are key...but it doesn't mean you have to skimp on style. A robe is a perfect gift especially when it's in an oh-so-soft machine washable fabric. Add a little femininity with lace details or keep things simple with a kimono cut, but make sure its a style she feels great in. If you want to splurge or save, the below styles are excellent options.

The Toddler Mom

Every woman needs a classic purse that's easy to wear and matches everything. It's time to ditch that diaper bag for something that can keep up with a little one on the go. We both own the Buxton tote, and it's a great all-purpose bag at an incredible price. Beyond the price, we love how easy it is to keep clean. Peanut butter hands--stand in fear! If you want to splurge, we have long been loyalists to Cuyana, who makes this crossbody that fits all her essentials and keeps her hands free.

The Mom Of Teens

Jewelry is always a special gift to receive. It has sentiment, stands the test of time, and is something that she can wear everyday. Now that grabby little hands are no longer a concern, spoil her with a delicate monogram necklace. Each option is available in silver or gold to suit her style and can be worn layered with multiple necklaces for a look all her own.

The Grandmother

As cheesy as it may seem, a picture really is worth a million words. We love photo books and recommend Mosaic or Shutterfly for creating a custom album that is easy and a collectable. If that feels like a little too involved add a punch of personality and trend to her wardrobe with a scarf or wrap--bonus points if the grandkids help to wrap it or sign the card.
