Trend Play: Our Favorite Flare Jeans and How to Wear Them

Madewell

Madewell

One of the best things about playing with a trend is taking a look you like and making it your own. This fall 1970's fashion has been the darling of the design world and the flare jean has made a come back.  While these jeans look great with a bow neck blouse and tall boots, how do you keep from looking like a Charlie's Angel? Here are a few tips and some of our favorite jeans to keep you modern and relevant.

How to Pair the Flare:

  • Use Modern Accessories as Your Differentiator: If you are wearing your flares with a slim black turtleneck add a pop with a modern chunky necklace
  • Add a Little Height: Flares look best with a heel to help elongate the leg. Make sure to alter the hem to the correct length to start.
  • Layer on Top: We love adding a little clean menswear look like the Madewell shot above. The contrasting shades are sleek and sophisticated and add tailored structure to the look.
  • Keep It Simple: If you feel like layering you look is too complicated and you don't want to commit a vest or blazer, keep it understated. Flares look great with a simple half tucked tank or tee--that shows off the high waistline. If you are feeling a little overwhelmed with waistline focus add a long necklace too keep the eye moving.

Above all have fun with the silhouette and experiment with what works for you!

Calling All Moms-To-Be: How to Dress in Fall's Hottest Trends

We love working with new moms and moms-to-be. And one of the questions we often get asked is how to dress throughout the different stages of pregnancy and still feel stylish. Fear not - we are going to show you how to incorporate Fall's must-haves into your maternity wardrobe.

1. Denim - A good pair of maternity denim is key. One of the best things about maternity denim is that it comes in range of styles from boyfriend to skinny. Try adding a denim dress or jacket to the mix.

2. Tweed - This fabric is just about everywhere this Fall. Our recommendation is to skip the tweed pants and opt for a nice jacket that you can get tailored post-pregnancy.

3. Prints - Women often think that they should stay away from certain prints during pregnancy, but the truth is stripes, florals and intricate patterns are all still fair game. If you liked it pre-pregnancy, than give it try during.

Dos and Don'ts of Fall Dressing

While this 80 degree weather may not feel like it, Fall is officially here. With so many new trends popping up every season, it can sometimes feel dizzying keeping track of them all (which is why we usually lean toward classic, timeless pieces with a few trend accents thrown in).

During our morning news round-up, we came across this fun piece by WhoWhatWear that breaks down the dos and don'ts of dressing this Fall. We especially love the bit about mixing textures and patterns. We'll post more on that later...

In the meantime enjoy the article, have a great Monday and sit tight - you'll be wearing those sweaters and booties in no time!

Trend Alert: Purple Ombre Hair is About to be HUGE for Fall/Winter

You heard it here... ombre purple hair is going to be a big trend for Fall/Winter. We first spotted it the other day on a makeup artist at the Benefit Cosmetic's counter. It started black at top and faded into a deep purple hue. .

Colored hair is nothing new thanks to celebrities like Nicole Richie, Kelly Osbourne and Kelly Ripa. Even Megan played with DIY pink ends last summer (it was a bit of a love/hate relationship). And ombre hair is a trend that started a few years ago. But combine the two and WOW!

Not ready to take the plunge into purple hair? We understand. Why not start with incorporating a few playful ombre pieces into your wardrobe. Here are a few of our favorites:

And if you do decide to go bold and try colored ombre hair, make sure to work with an experienced colorist and be prepared to stain a few towels (the color will bleed as it washes out).

The Gentlemen's Roundup: Three Silhouettes to Watch for Fall 2015

This season Fall 15 menswear has gotten the slightest bit more relaxed, oversized and sporty. The inspiration seems to be found in the tension between classic sophistication and sporty street wear.

1.) The Bomber-This silhouette is a classic on the menswear scene and cycles in and out of popularity. As a follow up to last year's athletic baseball jackets the bomber typically has a zipper front instead of snaps or buttons and more pocket detailing. This year you will find it not just in the typical nylon fabric but also in suede and aged leather variations.

2.) The Overcoat- Great for cooler climates or guys who want to polish off a more casual ensemble. Our prediction is the silhouette will be in vogue for a while, mirroring the rising trend in womenswear. Keep the hemline above the knee and the color dark if you are shorter to help elongate your legs.

3.) The Quilted Vest- A classic piece in fall wardrobes, the vest has transitioned from outdoorsy rugged to sleek urban.  We like this version from BR that adds a little structure at the collar and comes in flannel (keeping it distinct from vests designed primarily for performance or corporate swag). For guys who carry their weight in their midsection, avoid the horizontal quilting and opt for diagonal lines and top pockets that define the waist, similar to this Belstaff vest.

Wednesday Chillout Session: Our Favorite Iced Tea

IMG_1495.JPG

Sometimes the simplest things are the best.  When temperatures on the rise an afternoon glass of iced tea can be the one thing keeping the Canvas team on point and style ready.  Megan and I both love our iced tea variations, but this one shared by a friend continues to be a favorite. The lightly sweet and earthy flavor of the Equal Exchange Organic Rooibos is perfectly refreshing with lemon or a brightly flavored nectarine.

Ingredients

In a large pitcher add tea bags (I use one but like a lighter tea) and boiling water. Cover, steep for five minutes and refrigerate 1-2 hours to chill. When chill add lemon or nectarine and serve with mint spring for garnish. Enjoy!

How To Transition Your Wardrobe from Summer to Fall

While summer has officially ended for most people, it's just starting to kick into high gear for those of us in San Francisco. These record temps (hello 90 degrees in the city today!!!) make it hard to want to even think about cashmere, sweaters and fall jackets.

Living in a climate where it is basically the same weather year round can seasonal dressing challenging. Because let's face it, living in San Francisco means that you can get away with wearing the same thing 12 months of the year.

Here's a tip we share with our clients for creating seasonal wardrobes when you live somewhere that really doesn't have definitive seasons. Go into your closet and pull out your spring/summer pastels, florals, bright summer items, light dresses, and cropped pants. Move them to the back of your closet where you won't look at them everyday. Then take all of your fall/winter colors, deep jewel tones, mustards, navy blues, maroons, leather coats, corduroy... ok you get the picture... and put them in the front of your closet.

seasonanal-color-chart

There will some overlap in clothing that can be worn in spring/summer and fall/winter. That's ok, you pick what category you want to place it in. What you are doing is creating two distinct wardrobes so that when Spring rolls around again, you can swap out your clothes and actually feel like you have an entire untouched wardrobe to play with.

And for those of you who have 4 seasons a year, this article by Lucky Shops gives great advice on how to transition your wardrobe for fall.
