Memorial Day Style Essentials

Memorial Day means honoring our soldiers, parades, BBQs, and relaxing with friends and family. The unofficial start of summer, it's also the time when we swap out of cold weather clothes for summer essentials. Yay... we can wear white pants again (though did we ever really stop?)!

To celebrate summer's arrival, we've picked our favorite must-have's in crisp white that will keep you in style through Labor Day.

DIY Skin Brightening Facial

We love experimenting with new skincare treatments at the Canvas office. This week I volunteered to be the tester of an egg white and beer face mask (yes, it really has beer in it). Ready to add some glow to my post-winter skin, I was excited to see if this at home facial held up to the rave reviews I've heard in the past.

It only has 3 ingredients and when combined is a bit watery. I painted the mask on with fresh makeup brush and let it sit for 10 minutes. After I washed it off, my skin was smooth as silk and literally glowed. This is hands-down one of the best DIY recipes I've tried!

Ingredients: 1 egg white, 1/2 cup beer (any brand) and 2 tsp fresh lime juice (I used lemon).

How it works: Beer is a soothing cleanser with B vitamins, hops, saccharides and yeast, which help dissolve dead cells and increase skin's luminosity. When combined with egg white, the years in the beer creates a filmy mask that hydrates the skin and improves luminosity. Adding the vitamin C from the lime helps to clear pores and fade brown spots.

Directions: Combine the egg white and beer with the lime juice and mix. Paint onto face (or slather with your fingers). After 10 minutes, rinse with warm water.

Megan

Wedding Guest Dress Code Explained

Mrs-and-Mr-Wedding

Have you ever received a wedding invitation that left you clueless about what to wear? From "black tie optional" to "semi-formal," the language can be difficult to decipher. To help you look and feel your best, we've broken down the most common wedding-guest dress codes. Also take a look at out our SS Wedding 2015 Pinterest Board to see our favorite wedding looks by venue.

Black Tie Optional: A traditional tuxedo is the preferred choice of attire for black tie optional events. If a man decides not to wear a tux, a dark suit, white dress shirt and conservative tie are also appropriate. Women should wear either a cocktail dress or a dinner suit.

Black Tie: For a black tie event, men should wear the traditional black tuxedo with a formal white shirt and a black bow tie and cummerbund. For women, opt for a long, floor length evening dress. If it is summer, a cocktail reception or a daytime event, a short cocktail dress is also appropriate.

Formal: Formal usually means the same as black tie, but can also translate to a black shirt and no with a tux. Women should wear long dresses or dressy evening separates.

Semi-Formal: Semi-formal means that tuxes and long dresses aren’t required. An evening wedding (after 6 PM) still requires a dark suit for him and a cocktail dress for her. Daytime semi-formal events mean a suit for him (which may be a lighter color) and an appropriate short dress for her.

Business Formal: This is the same as semi-formal for men, but for women it means more tailored dressy suits and dresses.

Detox Drink to Jumpstart Your Day

At the Canvas office we are strong believers that looking good starts with feeling good from the inside out. Sometimes after a busy few weeks, our bodies need a bit of a refresh. This is a favorite go-to morning drink to help detox the body and jumpstart the day. It's also great for helping to knock out a cold (which I feel like half of us has right now!).

Organic apple cider vinegar and cranberry juice detox drink

Ingredients:
Juice from 1/2 lemon
1 tbsp organic apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup raw cranberry juice (not from concentrate)
(agave to sweeten if you like)

Directions:
Combine cranberry juice, lemon juice, and apple cider vinegar, and drink. Chase with a glass of water. Alternatively, you may combine the water with the juices as well.

Drink every morning for 2 weeks. You'll notice more energy and better skin after just a few days!

Daily Lust - Laura Mercier Lip Color

I love lipstick, but have always had a hard time wearing it outside of special events because of the constant need to reapply. It looks great at first, and then spreads and fades and needs constant attention.

A few months ago I was introduced to Laura Mercier's Paint Wash Lip Color. It applies like a gloss and dries like a matte lip color. Unlike most stains, it doesn't flake, peel or bleed outside of the lip. I applied the lip color and then went to meet friends and after 2 drinks and some food, the color was still on 2 hours later. I can't say enough about this product! My two favorites are the Red Brick and Fuchsia Mauve.

Laura Mercier Painted Lip Wash, $28

Give it a try and let us know know in the comments what you think!

Rock Your Leather Jacket this Spring

As the temperature heats up and the layers come off, there’s one winter wardrobe staple that will stick around for Spring: the leather jacket. Whether you’re wearing real or faux, a good leather (or pleather) jacket is the most versatile piece in your trans-seasonal wardrobe. Our favorite styles right now are buttery soft, full of soft color and have a feminine twist with the edge of a classic moto.

Styling Tips: Try wearing a black leather jacket over a bright summer dress  or a soft pastel version over the classic jeans-and-tee combination.
